The Telangana government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹1 crore to the family of 25-year-old Prohibition and Excise constable Gajula Soumya, who was injured while attempting to nab ganja smugglers in Nizamabad and died on Saturday (January 31, 2026). Moreover, Jupalli Krishna Rao, Minister of Prohibition and Excise, announced a government job for his brother.
The government will continue to pay salary to Soumya for the remaining period of his service, till the estimated date of retirement. Many ministers have reacted to his death.

Revanth Reddy directed the police to take strict action against those responsible for his death. He was admitted to Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad where he underwent treatment.
However, Soumya died on Saturday (January 31, 2026) after treatment for a week. The Chief Minister assured the bereaved family of all kinds of help from the government.
The Excise Minister on Sunday paid tribute to Soumya’s mortal remains at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad, where her body was taken for post-mortem and consoled the family members. Mr Rao said Soumya showed extraordinary courage and commitment while confronting those involved in ganja smuggling and described her conduct in the line of duty as exemplary and inspiring.
He said that the Excise Department employees decided to give one day’s salary to the family. Stating that the security of the employees and officers of the department is the responsibility of the government, the Excise Minister said that the proposal to give weapons to the officers is under the consideration of the government and a decision will be taken soon.
