Famous poet K. G. Shankar Pillai has won the Ezhuthachan Award for the year 2025.
Culture Minister Saji Cherian announced this here on Saturday (November 1, 2025). Instituted by the Government of Kerala, the Ezhuthachan Award honors eminent litterateurs who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Malayalam language and literature.
The jury was chaired by author and last year’s winner N. S.
Madhavan described Professor Pillai as an extremely talented poet who enriched Malayalam literature as a whole, and, in particular, poetry. Author K. R.
Meera and K. M. Anil was the other member of the jury and C.
P. , secretary of the Kerala Sahitya Academy.

Pillai’s poetry represents the exuberant pace of modern Malayalam poetry and its distinctive sensibility. The panel said poetic excellence remains the hallmark of his works, even when they respond strongly to contemporary issues. Traversing diverse avenues of poetic expression, Professor Pillai, who has previously won the Kerala and Central Sahitya Akademi Awards, has left his mark on literature over a span of 50 years, the jury said.

He is an alumnus of SN College, Kollam and the Department of Malayalam, University of Kerala. Highly respected as a teacher, he taught and later headed several government colleges in the state. He retired as the Principal of Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam.
His major works include Kochiyile Vrikshaangal, Ammamar, Njanante Ethirakakshi, Sanchari Marangal, Marichvarude Veedu, Thakazhiyum Manthrika Kuthirayum, Sainikante Premalekhanangal and K. G. Are included.
