The government on Monday (November 17, 2025) imposed an import ban on certain types of platinum jewelery till April next year. Importers now require a license from DGFT to import these goods.
Bullion dealers are importing platinum-alloy jewelery duty-free, even though the items contain about 90% gold and small amounts of silver and platinum. India Bullion and Jewelers Association (IBJA) has urged the government to ban the import of platinum jewelery to plug this policy loophole.
In September, the government had banned the import of some silver jewelery till March 31 next year. The move was aimed at curbing imports of silver in the name of “unstudded jewellery” from Thailand.
India has a free trade agreement with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Thailand is a member of this group of 10 countries.
