Government imposes airfare – With air fares skyrocketing due to widespread disruption in IndiGo’s flight operations, the government has stepped in to regulate fares for other airlines by setting fare caps. The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) on Saturday said taking serious note of concerns regarding unusually high airfares being charged by some airlines amid IndiGo’s disruption, it has used its regulatory powers “to ensure fair and reasonable fares on all affected routes” to protect passengers from “any kind of opportunistic pricing”. MoCA said, “An official directive has been issued to all airlines, mandating them to strictly adhere to the prescribed fare limits.
These limits will remain in force until the situation is completely stabilised. The objective of this directive is to maintain pricing discipline in the market, prevent any exploitation of passengers in distress and ensure that citizens who urgently need to travel โ including senior citizens, students and patients โ do not face financial hardship during this period.
