Anjali refers to folding of hands before God as an expression of devotion and dedication. Acharya Shri Alavander has thrown light on the depth of this feeling in the 28th verse of his ‘Stotra Ratnam’. Swami Vedanta Desika has further glorified its spiritual significance in his treatise Anjali Vaibhavam.
Anjali should be offered only to the Supreme Lord and His divine consort. This sacred work can be done at any time. Anyone can perform regardless of caste, creed, religion or gender.
Dr. Venkatesh explained in a discourse that Anjali can be done by raising the hands above the head or holding them together on the chest.
If due to misfortune a person is physically unable to offer Anjali, it is sufficient to offer Anjali mentally, with true contemplation. One may perform Anjali with or without full understanding of its significance โ the gesture, whether physical or mental, is accepted by God when offered with devotion.
Sri Parashar Bhattar has beautifully said in ‘Gunaratna Kosa’ that Goddess Mahalakshmi feels a tender regret. In response to our simple act of Anjali she can give nothing more than moksha โ the highest and final blessing.
Such is his infinite compassion. If a person does even one Anjali honestly, it is enough. There is no requirement that this be done repeatedly or with extensive effort.
Even a heartfelt gesture is enough to receive His immense blessings. Anjali has the divine power to melt the heart of God and attract His abundant grace upon us.
Its benefits are available immediately. It removes all negative influences and erases our sins even without our awareness.
It removes the effects of our past bad deeds and leaves no trace behind. Through Anjali, one receives every blessing, benefit and comfort required for a religious and fulfilling life.
