Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday (January 5, 2026) said the Supreme Court has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the apex court of Bhutan to facilitate exchange of young legal professionals. The CJI said at the beginning of the proceedings that under the MoU, two law clerks from Bhutan would be appointed by the Supreme Court here for a period of three months. “The clerks will receive honorarium at par with Indian law clerks and their traveling expenses will be borne by the Supreme Court,” the CJI said.
Introducing the law clerks to the packed courtroom, the CJI described them as “young and bright” and said they would be appointed to work in various courts during his tenure. “We have signed an MoU with the Supreme Court of Bhutan, and based on this, there will be two law clerks who will be paid on the basis of our honorarium and they will stay there for a period of three months. We will take care of their travel, both will work in different courts, both are very talented,” the CJI said.
“The objective of this initiative is to strengthen judicial cooperation and enhance institutional relations between the two countries,” he said.
