Mumbai missed their chance to top Group C in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and set up a quarter-final clash with Madhya Pradesh as they collapsed from 201/5 to 215 against Punjab in the last Group C match on Thursday. The defeat means Punjab have clinched the top spot and will now face Madhya Pradesh, while Mumbai will face rivals Karnataka in the quarter-finals to be played in Bengaluru on January 12.
Chasing a modest target, Mumbai were very close but the dismissal of captain Shreyas Iyer brought life into the game in Jaipur. Thereafter, Punjab spinners Mayank Markande, Harpreet Brar and Aaron Singh took charge of the tail-enders as Mumbai lost their last five wickets in the space of 14 runs. This happened when Sarfaraz Khan scored the fastest List A half-century by an Indian, a historic feat off just 15 balls.
Batting at number three, he scored 62 runs in 20 balls in an innings which included seven fours and five sixes. A blazing start from Sarfaraz and Shreyas, who scored 45 off 34, meant Mumbai had enough overs, but they squandered the chances in the most spectacular fashion.
He was out in 26. 2 overs.
