Supreme Court live – The Supreme Court is set to hear petitions challenging the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to conduct special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in several states, including West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Bihar. Editorial: Descending into farce: On Election Commission of India, SIR Earlier on Thursday (January 8, 2026), a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant had postponed the hearing in the case till Tuesday (January 13, 2026). On January 6, the Election Commission had told the bench that it has the power and competence to conduct SIR of the voter list, besides, it has a constitutional duty to ensure that no foreigner is registered as a voter.
The petitions have challenged the ECI’s decision to conduct the SIR exercise, which has raised important constitutional questions on the scope of the election panel’s powers, citizenship and the right to vote.
