The Congress committee formed for seat-sharing talks with the ruling DMK has identified around 70 assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu from where it would like to contest the 2026 assembly elections. A committee member said, “We are firm that our alliance with the DMK will continue, and it is for the high command to decide on issues like power-sharing and how many seats we should get. The focus is on identifying constituencies where we have our base and where our prospects are strong.

” The state unit of Congress is likely to gain momentum from the visit of its leader Rahul Gandhi in the third week of February. DMK parliamentary party leader Kanimozhi has already discussed with him issues related to seat-sharing, number of seats to be allotted and power sharing.

DMK has made it clear that power-sharing is not possible. On Sunday, AICC committee members for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry – Girish Chodankar, Suraj Hegde, TNCC president K. Selvaperunthagai, and Congress legislature party leader S.

Rajeshkumar โ€“ met and discussed various issues. AICC representative Nivedith Alva did not attend the meeting. The Congress is also keen to contest more constituencies in the southern districts.

“We do not want to be represented by DMK ministers and district secretaries or seek preferred constituencies. On the other hand, we are ready to take on the BJP on the ground,” said a member who attended the meeting in Chennai.

The party also decided to strengthen booth committees and BLA2 structures to ensure effective election functioning. โ€œWe can start talks on seat-sharing after the DMK forms a committee for the purpose,โ€ the leader said.
