Whenever the Bharatiya Janata Party government is in a difficult situation in the Parliament, it resorts to some ‘strategies’. This time it was the opposition’s bogeyman who ‘planned to attack’ the Prime Minister in Parliament (“PM told to avoid Lok Sabha as Congress MPs planned an ‘unexpected act’: Birla”, February 6). Since the opposition was armed with significant and pressing issues to corner the government – first, the revelations of a former army chief in his book on the 2020 India-China conflict, and second, India’s long-term ties with Russia even at the expense of India’s rights in the trade deal with the United States, and the welfare of Indian farmers and local manufacturers – the ruling party’s game plan was quite clear.

The observation that there is a shift from the Bhakti movement to a self-respect movement that has been anti-Brahministic and anti-Brahmin rituals and Sanskrit systems of worship is relevant.
