Before the ceasefire, the Israeli Air Force conducted hundreds of strike missions across Iran, deploying more than 13,000 weapons against military and government targets. The joint strike killed dozens of senior political and military figures, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to Israeli military and political leaders, the campaign against Iran, launched by Israel and the United States on February 28, was aimed at achieving regime change, weakening Tehran’s military capabilities, countering threats such as its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and “creating conditions” for internal upheaval against the regime.

The firing in Lebanon comes as both the United States and Iran accuse each other of violating a ceasefire agreement ahead of their first peace talks in the conflict. The two-day ceasefire has halted US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, but it has not eased the blockade of the strait โ which has caused unprecedented disruptions to global energy supplies โ nor has it stopped Israel’s parallel conflict with Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.
