Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary, Union Petroleum Ministry, told reporters at the bi-weekly inter-ministerial briefing on the situation in West Asia on Friday (May 29, 2026) that the demand for petrol has doubled in fourteen districts of the country, while the demand for diesel has doubled in six districts. Ms. Sharma said that around 150 districts across the country have seen a growth of more than thirty percent in petrol sales, while 156 districts have seen a similar growth in diesel sales.
“There are around 150 districts where petrol sales have seen a growth of more than thirty per cent, while around 14 districts have seen a growth of more than a hundred per cent,” he said. According to the government, the rising sales stem from increased demand with the onset of agricultural season, price differentials leading to wholesale diesel consumers switching to retail and consumers opting for state-run OMCs rather than privately owned OMCs. In separate press statements, the government said petrol and diesel sales in Maharashtra have increased by 17.
