Tejasvi Surya demands – According to Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, around 20 technical glitches and service disruptions have been reported in Bengaluru’s Namma Metro network since January 2024, with the highest number of incidents occurring on the Purple Line. Expressing concern over the repeated breakdowns, Mr Surya in an ex post on Thursday said the issue is no longer about isolated technical glitches but points to a pattern that raises serious questions about the safety and reliability of Metro operations.

He stressed that the safety of passengers using the Namma Metro must remain paramount and called for greater transparency and stronger monitoring. Mr Surya said he had consulted experts in metro safety and systems engineering before writing to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) with a set of recommendations aimed at improving operational safety. They also wrote to the Commissioner of Railway Safety (Southern Circle), urging the authority to take cognizance of the matter and initiate necessary measures to ensure that BMRCL adheres to the highest standards of safety.

Mr Surya’s statement comes after a major disruption on the Purple Line, which left thousands of commuters stranded across Bengaluru. On Tuesday evening, train services were halted during peak hours due to a technical glitch in the underground section near Cubbon Park metro station, causing serious inconvenience to passengers and crowding at several metro stations, after which services were restored the next day.

Information about the disturbance was also received on Thursday evening.
