Flood

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has issued urgent flood warnings as the Krishna and Godavari rivers continue to rise, affecting low-lying areas across the State on Sunday. At Bhadrachalam, the Godavari River recorded a water level of 42.4 feet, while the Dowleswaram Barrage reported an inflow and outflow of 10.88 lakh cusecs. The first flood warning remains in force at the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram in East Godavari district, as the Godavari has been in spate over the past day. Inflows of floodwater exceeded 10 lakh cusecs by Sunday evening, according to the Water Resource Departmentโ€™s Godavari flood report. Over 10 lakh cusecs are being released into the Godavari Delta through canals. This marks the fifth flood in the Godavari region within two months. Downstream at the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage, alerts have been sounded in the riverine islands of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district, including P. Gannavaram and Mummudivaram. East Godavari District Collector Ch. Keerthi has appealed to inland fisherfolk not to venture into the river for fishing until further notice. โ€œThe irrigation, revenue, and police officials are on alert for rehabilitation and rescue operations along the banks of the Godavari,โ€ said Ms. Keerthi. Control rooms have been set up at the Collectorate and Kovvur. Meanwhile, the Krishna river at the Prakasam Barrage has reached a second flood warning level. Current inflows and outflows at the barrage stand at 6.02 lakh cusecs, with flows expected to rise to 6.5 lakh cusecs. The barrage is currently discharging 6,22,395 cusecs, with the water level at 15.5 feet. Devotees visiting Vijayawada for the Dasara festivities are advised to exercise caution while performing ritual baths. APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain emphasised that residents in low-lying and riverine areas should take necessary precautions, remain alert, and monitor official instructions. For emergency assistance, citizens can contact the control room via toll-free numbers 112, 1070, or 18004250101. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, as inflows from upstream States contribute to rising water levels. A further escalation of floods cannot be ruled out.
