The Kerala High Court has directed the state government to clarify its stand on resumption of construction of houses under the Life Mission Housing Project in Wadakkanchery in Thrissur district. The construction company had halted work after the Central Bureau of Investigation initiated a probe into alleged violations of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) on acceptance of foreign aid for the project. Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Shyam Kumar V.
M. The division bench gave this decision. The order was issued while hearing a petition filed by Congress leader Anil Akkara, who had sought directions to restart the project.
He had said that if there is any further delay in its completion, the 140 homeless families who were the intended beneficiaries of the project will be adversely affected. Following the earlier direction of the court, the National Institute of Technology-Calicut had conducted a structural stability inspection and submitted that further construction could be proceeded with safely. The government had said there was no need to demolish the apartments despite concerns over the quality of construction.
