India captain Shubman Gill retired hurt after spraining his neck while attempting a slog sweep off Simon Harmer on the second day of the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata on Saturday (November 15, 2025). Gill faced just three balls before getting injured and had to leave the field.
He hit a slog-sweep four over backward square leg off Harmer, but was hit hard in the follow-through, which instantly crushed the back of his neck. The physio immediately came in and after a brief examination the opener left, grimacing in uneasiness. BCCI has not yet released any information regarding the severity of the injury.
The incident occurred in the 35th over after the drinks break, where Harmer had moments earlier dismissed Washington Sundar for 29 off 82 balls with a classic off-spinner’s dismissal – the ball drifting and turning to take an outside edge to Aiden Markram at slip. Gill’s premature dismissal meant India lost three batsmen โ two wickets (Yashaswi Jaiswal, Washington) and one retired hurt โ early on, changing the complexion of the session.
