India set the tone in the opening match on Saturday, thanks to composed half-centuries from Harvansh Pangalia and RS Ambareesh, who rescued the visiting team from early trouble and secured a hard-fought victory.
After a poor start, India’s score was 67 runs for 4 wickets in the 15th over, both of them took the innings forward and then accelerated and put South Africa under pressure. Openers Vaibhav Suryavanshi (11) and Aaron George (5) were out early and India suffered a double blow with the early dismissals of Abhigyan Kundu (21) and Vedant Trivedi (21).
Pangalia and Ambareesh then took charge, rebuilding carefully at first and adding 137 runs for the fifth wicket before changing gears. Pangalia played an innings of 93 runs in 95 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes, while Ambareesh made a solid contribution of 65 runs in 79 balls with the help of seven fours.
Late contributions from Kanishk Chauhan (32 runs off 23 balls) and Khilan Patel (26 runs off 12 balls) propelled India to 301 for 8 in the allotted 50 overs. South Africa’s 17-year-old left-arm fast bowler JJ Basson took 4 wickets for 54 runs and prevented the total from going higher. In reply, South Africa had a wobbly start and lost three wickets for 62 runs, with Deepesh Devendran taking two crucial wickets.
Zorich Van Schalkwyk scored an unbeaten 60 off 72 balls as the side chased down the target but were reduced to 148 for 4 in 27. 4 overs due to rain.
When the conditions worsened, the umpires resorted to the DLS method, leading to India’s victory by 25 runs.
