Maharashtra: Bawankule Warns Against OBC-Maratha Rift
Maharashtra Revenue Minister and head of the newly formed Other Backward Classes (OBC) sub-committee, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, issued a strong warning against escalating tensions between the OBC and Maratha communities. The warning followed the committee’s first meeting, where concerns surrounding a recent government resolution (GR) granting Marathas access to Kunbi caste certificates were discussed.
Concerns Over Maratha GR and OBC Reservations
The contentious GR, allowing Marathas to claim Kunbi caste status based on the Hyderabad gazetteer, has sparked significant opposition from OBC communities who fear it could negatively impact their existing reservations. NCP Minister and OBC leader Chhagan Bhujbal voiced concerns during the meeting, specifically objecting to the use of the term “Maratha” in the GR, citing its vagueness and potential for detrimental effects on OBC quotas.
Committee’s Stance on Certificate Issuance
Bawankule emphasized the committee’s unanimous agreement on the need for strict adherence to the GR when issuing certificates. He stressed that Gram Sabha-level committees and tehsildars must refrain from issuing OBC certificates based on inaccurate entries, highlighting the importance of a robust monitoring system. Certificates, he clarified, should only be granted when “Kunbi-Maratha” or “Maratha-Kunbi” is explicitly mentioned in the relevant documentation.
Sub-Committee’s Focus on OBC Welfare
The eight-member sub-committee, comprised of representatives from the Mahayuti alliance, is tasked with developing comprehensive strategies for the social, educational, and economic advancement of OBC communities in Maharashtra. This includes formulating plans for enhanced educational opportunities, improved employment prospects, and overall economic empowerment.
Significant Budget Allocation and Employment Initiatives
Bawankule announced the committee’s approval of a substantial โน3,800 crore budget dedicated to the welfare of over 353 OBC communities. Furthermore, the committee plans to implement a new employment generation scheme for OBC youth, modeled after the successful Annasaheb Patil Mahamandal Yojana. A review of past decisions made during Bhujbal’s tenure as committee president is also underway, encompassing approximately 12 to 13 previously implemented policies.
Government’s Commitment to OBC Concerns
Maharashtra Minister Pankaja Munde reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to addressing the concerns of OBC communities regarding the Maratha GR. The committee’s proactive approach and substantial budget allocation underscore the government’s dedication to fostering inclusive growth and development for all OBC communities in the state.
