Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (January 11, 2025) flagged off the metro rail from Mahatma Mandir metro station in Gandhinagar, marking the inauguration of the remaining phase-II section of the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro project. Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi were present on this occasion. After flagging off the metro service, the Prime Minister interacted with the citizens gathered at the station.
An atmosphere of celebration and devotion was witnessed at the station as people waved the national flag and raised slogans of “Jai Somnath, Jai Narendra Bhai Ne Jai Somnath”. As part of the programme, Mr Patel and Mr Sanghvi traveled by metro on the Phase-II route in Gandhinagar. During the visit, the Chief Minister interacted with passengers and students and sought feedback on the metro services, reiterating the state government’s commitment to provide modern, efficient and fast public transport.
Providing details of the project, Anand Singh Bisht, Director (Projects and Planning), Metro Rail, said that the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Rail was first inaugurated in Ahmedabad in October 2022. In September 2024, the Prime Minister had inaugurated metro services from Motera to Sector-1, as well as extensions to Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) and GIFT City. With Sunday’s inauguration, the remaining Phase-II section comprising seven metro stations over a distance of 7.
8 km was operational. Mr Bisht said that during the first phase, the Metro recorded an average daily ridership of about 35,000 passengers. With Phases I and II now fully integrated, the daily number of passengers traveling between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar has increased to approximately 1.
60 lakh, marking an increase of approximately 60%.
