Gauri Ramnarayan play – The Ramayana, feels author, playwright, and journalist Gowri Ramnarayan, is dominated by male characters. โWhen you mention the epic, you think of male heroes.
If Sita were not Ramaโs wife, she wouldnโt be there,โ she says, adding: โAll the women in the Ramayana have subsidiary roles. They appear and disappear and are reflected through the male gaze.
โ In 2019, Gowri wrote a play featuring six women who play supporting roles in the Ramayana. Titled โWhat She Saidโ, it is now set to be staged for the first time in Coimbatore. The play, that Gowri has directed as well, will be performed by actors Sunandha Raghunathan, Akhila Ramnarayan, and Aarabi Veeraraghavan.
It will be accompanied by live singing by Srividya Vadlamani, with sound design by B Charles, the founder of Chennai Art Theatre. โI have written the play as six monologues,โ says Gowri, adding that each actor will play two roles. How would the women of the Ramayana see the story of Rama? This was among the first questions that surfaced in Gowriโs mind when she began writing the play.
โThis is the first time Iโve written a play that focuses entirely on women,โ she says: โFor the actors themselves, this has been a journey of self-discovery. โ For the story, she has picked six women from โdifferent levels of existence,โ representing diverse backgrounds and origins. This offers viewers a chance to take in the epic through a different spectrum.
For instance, how would it be if the Ramayana is seen from the perspective of Kaikeyi or Urmila? โYou would see two different colours,โ says Gowri. Gowri believes that every story is complete only if it finds its listener.
โFor the actor speaking on stage, the play comes alive only when there is a listener; a community that will understand womenโs perspective,โ she says, hoping that โWhat She Saidโ finds that kind of a community in the city. When the play was premiered at the Kalakshetra theatre in December 2019, it was a โresounding success. โ Unfortunately for them, the pandemic hit soon after and they couldnโt take it to other parts of the country.
โWhich is why we are reviving it this year,โ says Gowri. Music will form a crucial role in the story-telling, with Srividyaโs live singing adding to the experience. โWhat cannot be expressed through words, through the voice of a woman, will be said through music,โ says Gowri.
The play is being staged in the city thanks to their collaboration with Medai, and the team is next travelling to Bengaluru with it. Gowri hopes to take it to other cities as well.
โWhat She Saidโ is being staged on February 7, 7pm, at Medai The Stage, Clusters Media Institute, 439, Kamarajar Road, Hope College, Coimbatore. Tickets on Bookmyshow.
