Tiruppavai holds great significance for many people today. For many, this is the highlight of Andal’s effortless presentation of poetic Tamil and devotion. For many, it is M.
L. Has lasting appeal. Excellent musical performance by Vasanthakumari.
For some people, this is the highlight of Pongal, especially on the days of Koodarai Vellam Seer Govinda and Sakkarai Pongal. However, Tiruppavai, known as Tamil Vedam, is a song from Srivilliputtur, where Andal emphasizes togetherness in finding eternal happiness (Perumal), said Damal Perundevi. After saluting him by various names, Andal calls Govinda thrice in this Pasuram (27th).
After morning penance and listening to the discourse on Krishna incarnation (which itself occurs only when one is truly blessed), one should surrender to Perumal by saying Govinda three times and he will take care: Krishna himself gives this assurance in the Bhagavad Gita, when he says give up worldly needs and surrender to me, I will accept that surrender. One who meditates on or accepts Perumal is never forsaken. In the Ramayana, when everyone gathers for Sita Rama Pattabhishekam and Vasistha is about to begin the ceremony, Perumal, who had appeared as Rama, asks the sage to wait as he was unable to find his most important person.
He was referring to Anjaneya, who decided to take his seat under the coronation throne, so that he could carry it on his shoulders: a form of service to Perumal and Thayar that is unparalleled. Truly impressed, Rama presented Anjaneya with a precious pearl necklace. Andal wants a similar, world-famous gift from Krishna.
When he says that he has gifted her everything she asked for in Tiruppavai, Andal says that she and her friends (devotees) only want to serve her, no matter how many rebirths they take. Surrendering to Him and receiving His grace is all that matters.
