The government on Friday urged Dhaka to speed up the verification process of suspected Bangladeshi illegal immigrants to facilitate their deportation to the country. The Ministry of External Affairs said that as far as deportation of these people is concerned, a bilateral mechanism exists.

“We refer these cases to Bangladesh to verify the nationality of these people. And once it is verified, we proceed with the deportation process,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, citing several requests made in the past to Bangladesh to expedite the verification process. India has laws to deal with people living in India illegally, including from Bangladesh.

“And they will be dealt with accordingly,” he said.
