Symbolic photo New Delhi: All new models of trucks and buses, including school buses, will be required to have Advanced Driver Alert System (ADAS), which includes automatic emergency braking, driver drowsiness warning and lane departure warning system, from October 2027. Vehicle regulations call for mandatory inclusion of these safety features to alert drivers and prevent automatic application of brakes in case of delay in action. The ministry has specified that both mini and regular buses and trucks manufactured after the specified deadline will be required to be fitted with vehicle stability function and automatic emergency braking system (AEBS), which will automatically detect a potential forward collision in the same lane and activate the braking system to avoid accidents.
AEBS, after detecting any possible forward collision, will warn the driver and it will activate the vehicle. If the driver does not respond immediately to the warning, the braking system will use the brakes to reduce the severity of or avoid a collision. The mandatory feature of driver drowsiness warning in these vehicles is also important as this safety feature will alert drivers when their vehicle inadvertently drifts out of their lane without signaling.
The system will alert the driver using visual, auditory, or haptic (sense of touch) feedback for corrective action. Similarly, the drowsiness warning system will assess the driver’s alertness through vehicle system analysis and warn the driver through audio alerts if necessary.
