West Bengal Assembly – West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday (May 24, 2026) said that the state gained notoriety due to various recruitment scams during the previous Trinamool Congress rule and said that his government will introduce a new recruitment policy in the next budget session of the Assembly. “A bill to create a new recruitment policy will be introduced in the next budget session of the West Bengal Assembly,” the Chief Minister said while participating in a job fair in Sealdah on Saturday (May 24, 2026).
The budget session of West Bengal Assembly will start from June 18. The third term of the Trinamool Congress rule from 2021 to 2026 witnessed several recruitment scams, such as the teacher recruitment scam and the municipal recruitment scam, where allegations of handing over jobs for monetary gains were made.
The Supreme Court had canceled the jobs of around 26,000 teachers and non-teaching posts in 2025 due to irregularities in the recruitment process. Allegations of corruption in government jobs hurt the Trinamool Congress and the party lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recently concluded assembly elections.
“Even the examination centers were so dysfunctional that Eastern Railway, South Eastern Railway and Northeast Frontier Railway were not conducting their recruitment examinations in the state,” Mr Adhikari said. The Chief Minister said that the youth of West Bengal were appearing for the examination in the neighboring states of Bihar, Assam and Odisha. Expressing his opinion, the Chief Minister said that carbon copy of OMR (Optical Mark Reader) of the written examination conducted in the state should be given to every candidate.
“Our aim will be to give carbon copies of OMR to the examinees. This is a very bad practice (not giving OMR sheets) with malafide intentions. Such practices were resorted to to promote nepotism and corruption,” Mr Adhikari said.
The Chief Minister said that to maintain transparency, more emphasis should be given on written examination instead of interview. “We want transparent written examinations for recruitment, proper assessment of academic excellence and implementation of 100-point roster for reservation, which is mandatory.
The government also wants to reduce the percentage of marks allotted to Viva examinations and publish the scores of candidates on the websites of recruitment organisations,” Mr Adhikari said.
